Mrs. Jost Computer Unit
About the Teacher:
My name is Stacie Jost, and I am the computer units teacher. I will spend 9 weeks with each team. For seventh grade, the course will include keyboarding, computer applications, and study skills. For the eighth grade, the course will include advanced computer applications including video editing. This is my fifth year at Morton Junior High School, and I really enjoyed making the switch from language arts to computers and study skills. I graduated from Illinois State University in 2003 with a B.S. Ed in Elementary Education with a focus in language arts and social science. I am certified K-9 in both of those areas. While my formal training has not been in technology, I recently started my Master’s degree at Illinois State University. I am working towards my Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus in technology. In May, I was blessed with a beautiful little girl named Savannah. I will be staying home first quarter to spend a little extra time with her before returning to work. While I will definitely miss being a part of the Green team this year, I look forward to returning to work in October and being part of the White team.
Part of my class for the 8th graders is video editing; the students will be going to a school or community event and capturing it on video. The students will then edit the video in my class, and, hopefully, their video will play on local cable channel 20. If the students know of a school event they would like to video, email me and we can make arrangements for video equipment at that event. Even if the students do not have my class till fourth quarter, they may capture their video of an event that is occurring anytime throughout the school year. The students may work in small groups of 3-4 students for this project, but the students must be in the same units class (first hour students must work in groups with first hour students, second hour students must work in groups with second hour students, etc.) Think ahead of all the different activities and events that occur at school and in our community and capture one of these exciting events on video.
Mission: My mission for this class is to relieve any fear my students may have toward the computer. There are days when we’ve all wanted to throw our computers out the window, but in general, I would like my students to feel comfortable keyboarding and using the Microsoft Office software. For the seventh grade students, it is also my mission to help them make a smooth transition to the junior high through the curriculum for the study skills section of this nine-week course.

Mrs. Becker Art
About Me
I'm short. I love what I do, and I've been doing it a loooong time. I truly LIKE junior high kids. I believe that the arts are important and should be a part of every student's school experience from kindergarten through college. I don't eat meat, and my favorite food is toast. I have a husband, 2 wonderful daughters (and two "also wonderful" sons-in-law), a very energetic big red dog (kind of like Clifford), a schizophrenic cat, and I am known as Nana to 2 beautiful little boys named Jake and Alex. I will also have another new grandchild in April '08. All of these things make me happy. I have taught in room 216 at MJHS for 21 years, and before that I taught in Moline, Wyoming, and Pekin, Ill. and in Albia, Iowa. I've taught every grade from 5-college, but I like jr. high best. I think reading, bicycling, gardening and golf are fun. Cooking rivals art as my passion---unfortunately for my figure, I enjoy eating what I cook, too! I love to laugh and be around people who make me do it. Life is good.
Here's why you need to take art: .... because understanding art leads to a broader understanding of yourself and others.....because the world is full of enough ugliness, and enjoying a little beauty once in awhile soothes the soul.....because with an appreciation for art comes an appreciation for the culture which created it. This, in turn, leads to an appreciation and acceptance of those who are different from us...the making of art is therapeutic. Manipulating clay, painting a picture, or pulling a print takes concentration and requires us to "step outside ourselves" and enjoy the physical aspect of creating something wonderful...because being creative feels good.... because it's FUN!

Mrs. Zwaga 7th & 8th grade - Health
ABOUT THE TEACHER:
I graduated in 1997 from Illinois State University with a Bachelors of Science in health education and a minor in history education. This will be my 9th year of teaching. Morton Junior High is where I did my student teaching back in 1997. I then spent 4 years teaching at Pontiac Junior High School, and three years teaching/subbing for Unit 5 in Normal. I am now in my 2nd year here at Morton, and it is great to be back! I love the profession of teaching because I get to spend my day surrounded by children. I especially love teaching health because there are so many important and interesting things to talk about!
MISSION:
My mission for health class is to help you save a life, whether it be your own or someone else’s. We learn CPR/First Aid, safety issues of all kinds, violence prevention, alcohol/drug information, and abstinence education. All of these topics can help you save yourself or someone else some day. Health is one of the most important classes you will ever have! I feel so fortunate to be the one to teach it to you!
