The end of 7th grade is fast approaching! The Green Team teachers have had a lot of fun working with all of our students this year. We still have several activities planned that will take us through May. One of the activities is an Olympics interdisciplinary unit. The unit will begin in May and involve several group activity days. These days will have our students working together to represent a country that will be participating in the culminating event - an Olympic Events Challenge, complete with an awards ceremony, medals, and ribbons. More information will be available as the kick-off for this challenge nears.

Mr. VandenBerg Language Arts
About the Teacher
I’m an Aries born March 26th to my lovely mother Eileen. I have an older brother Theo and a younger sister Ashley. Theo works in Chicago for a non-profit organization that helps maintain the well-being of mentally challenged adults while my sister pursues to run her own business in the city. I tell you this information because I’m very close with my siblings and cherish my mother. I grew up mostly in the south suburbs of Chicago moving from town to town. Somewhere along my journey I collected bits of motivation here and there; some from stories told to me by old ladies with huge purses while others from the harsh truths of a single-mother household. Nonetheless, I find myself fascinated with the human experience and the language that we use to convey every last detail.
In high school and college, I learned to respect the brilliant and creative minds of Albert Einstein, Ernest Hemmingway, William Shakespeare, Steven Spielberg, Aldus Huxley, and Doctor Seuss among many. It is my belief that great minds truly exercise a fine balance between cognitive solitude and an obligation to lead. It’s from these motivations and my childhood that I chose to become a teacher. I feel that it’s my goal to influence the people around me to be better at everything that they do and to strive for nothing but that.
Mission for the Class I believe that the classroom should be a comfortable environment free of any prejudices, hatred, and stresses that would otherwise infringe on the educational process. Upon crossing the threshold of my classroom all preconceived notions, expectations, and fears should be relinquished. I believe that class should function as a team effort competing in a realm of intellect and should bring about not only intellectual solidity but also emotional freedom and social awareness. From a collection of minds and thoughts, the mission is to function as one great mind; as we learn from each other we find the path to truth and expression.

About The Teacher:
2007-08 will be my 17th year teaching science at the junior high level - my 7th year at MJHS. I have also taught math, language arts, and summer school classes. During the past 17 years I have coached cheerleading and assisted in track and basketball. I have also sponsored various extra-curricular activities. I currently sponsor the MJHS science club. Information about this club can be found on my website or on the MJHS announcements.
Mission For The Class I would like to help my students to not only gain a deeper understanding of earth and life science, but also to become better problem solvers and critical thinkers. I want to assist the students in their growth toward becoming successful, caring adults.

Mrs. Dawson Math
About the Teacher
While a student at Bradley University, I was involved in multiple levels of education, ranging from preschool and 2nd grade, all the way to 6th grade! After earning my Bachelor's in 2002, I moved to the Chicago area and taught 7th grade math for three years; I also coached soccer and volleyball at the middle school. After returning to my hometown of Peoria in the summer of 2005, I completed my Master's Degree in Educational Technology through Lesley University. The 2007-2008 school year will be my third teaching in the Morton School District!
Mission for the Class My ultimate goal in the classroom is to reinforce the seventh grade curriculum to increase student understanding and ability in the area of mathematics. We explore a variety of concepts including number theory, data analysis, fractions, geometry, and proportions. Emphasis is placed on improving organization and management skills, cooperating with peers, and utilizing available resources. I hope to provide a positive and comfortable environment for students as they participate in daily work, class projects, and extra opportunities.

Miss Neal Geography
About the Teacher Hello! My name is Miss Neal. I grew up in Washington, Illinois. In 2005, I graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in social science education. This is my second year teaching at Morton Junior High. I love teaching geography on the green team and am so excited for the 2007-2008 school year. In addition to teaching, I enjoy playing and watching sports. I also spend a lot of time playing the piano. Furthermore, I like to be involved with extra curricular activities and encourage all students to actively engage in different school functions. It is such a privilege for me to teach at Morton Junior High. I am honored to be a part of every student’s life and look forward to a great year!

Mrs. Lehman Resource
About the Teacher
I graduated from Illinois State University in 2005 with my Learning/Behavior Specialist 1 degree. This is my third year as a Green Team resource teacher at MJHS. Most of the day, I can be found working as the second teacher in a Green Team classroom, providing extra help to students. I also teach a 7th grade language arts class and study hall. This year I will be extra busy because I am starting my Masters Degree in Reading from Illinois State University. I'm looking forward to applying what I learn at the college level to my current classroom. On top of that, I also sponsor Adventure Club (formerly known as Circle of Friends). This is a group of students who get together a couple times a month to have fun, reach out in the community (which is new this year), and make school a better place for all students. The more people we have, the more fun it is, so invite your friends!
Mission for the Class
The mission I have for each of my students is to become positive, independent members of their community, wherever that may be, by connecting the information they learn in my classroom to their every day lives.
