About the Teacher:

I absolutely love my job, a perfect combination of two of my passions, art and teens! I graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in art and a minor in English. I began my career teaching middle school art near Chicago for a couple years before settling down with family downstate. When my children were little, I stayed home with them and led an after-school art program at the Crossword Cafe, a youth center in Chillicothe, where I live with my husband, two boys, and collie dog. I began teaching art part-time at Morton Junior High in 2015, and was thrilled when it became a full-time position the following year.

In art class, we explore a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, digital art, paper maché, ceramics, and sculpture. We also learn to observe and discuss the work of other artists, contemporary, historical, and multicultural. I believe that with just a little secret principle here and there and a bit of practice at basic skills, everyone can express their passions, opinions, and interests with visual art. Creating can be so much fun! That's not to mention the growing career opportunities in art and design.

My mission for art class is to empower students with skills to create, discuss, and understand art so that they may express their own artistic voice.

About the Teacher
I graduated in 1997 from Illinois State University with a Bachelors of Science in Health Education and a minor in History Education.  This will be my 17th year of teaching.  Morton Junior High is where I did my student teaching back in 1997.  I then spent 4 years teaching at Pontiac Junior High School, and three years teaching/subbing for Unit 5 in Normal.  I am now in my 11th year here at Morton.  I love the profession of teaching because I get to spend my day surrounded by children.  I especially love teaching health because there are so many important and interesting things to talk about!

Mission for the Class
My mission for health class is to help you save a life, whether it be your own or someone else's. We learn CPR/First Aid, safety issues of all kinds, violence prevention, alcohol/drug information, and abstinence education.  All of these topics can help you save yourself or someone else some day.  Health is one of the most important classes you will ever have!  I feel so fortunate to be the one to teach it to you.

Writing Lab

About the Teacher

MJHS Writing Lab has been redesigned for the 2016-2017 school. Our new tiered facility allows students in the back row to see the front of the classroom without rows in front of them blocking their view. The Writing Lab curriculum has also been updated to help develop the 7th graders skills in writing with technology. During the first semester, Writing Lab 1 will focus on improving keyboarding skills, refining sentence fluency, and efficiently using the variety of  technology offered to MJHS students. Writing Lab 2, which will begin in the second semester, will focus on developing research skills with attention to maintaining academic integrity while using available resources. White Team students will be in the Writing Lab first and third quarters, while Green Team students will meet in Writing Lab during the second and fourth quarters of the school year.

I'm fortunate to enjoy a position which combines a couple of  my favorite activities - writing and using technology. Prior to teaching in the Writing Lab at MJHS, I worked in the Jefferson Elementary Computer Lab. I also served as a substitute teacher in Morton for several years when my children were younger. My teaching career began with high school English and junior high language arts classes. An English major with a journalism minor, I graduated from Eastern Illinois University.

Mission for the Class

My mission for the Writing Lab is to help each student become comfortable and confident with the variety of technology tools that are offered in the school district.
