Art

About the Teacher:

I absolutely love my job, a perfect combination of two of my passions, art and teens! I graduated from Eastern Illinois University in 2004 with a Bachelor of Arts in art and a minor in English. I began my career teaching middle school art near Chicago for a couple years before settling down with family downstate. When my children were little, I stayed home with them and led an after-school art program at the Crossword Cafe, a youth center in Chillicothe, where I live with my husband, two boys, and collie dog. I began teaching art part-time at Morton Junior High in 2015, and was thrilled when it became a full-time position the following year.

In art class, we explore a variety of media including drawing, painting, printmaking, digital art, paper maché, ceramics, and sculpture. We also learn to observe and discuss the work of other artists, contemporary, historical, and multicultural. I believe that with just a little secret principle here and there and a bit of practice at basic skills, everyone can express their passions, opinions, and interests with visual art. Creating can be so much fun! That's not to mention the growing career opportunities in art and design.

Mission:

My mission for art class is to empower students with skills to create, discuss, and understand art so that they may express their own artistic voice.

STEM Lab

About the Teacher
After Graduating Purdue University in 2007 I moved to East Peoria, IL with my wife, Kati, who also attended Purdue. My first teaching position was as a 5th grade math and science teacher, as well as an honors Algebra teacher at Peoria Academy.  My second year at Peoria Academy I started an enrichment class using the STEM curriculum from Project Lead the Way.  In 2013 I started a STEM class at Peoria Academy that was a core part of the middle school program as well as being the school’s Technology Director.  After leaving Peoria Academy in 2015 I went to Dunlap to teach STEM to 7th grade students.  I began my career at Morton in 2017 starting the CareerMaker/STEM class. I also coached MathCounts for 3 years at Peoria academy, guiding the team to state every year.

I have two elementary age children, Connor and Kennedi.  In addition to teaching I love spending time with my family at Purdue athletic events, boating, and going to Disney.

Mission
My mission is to give students the opportunity to explore activities and topics they may not normally see in the classroom.  As well as guide them to success through problem solving, grit, and inquiry based learning and activities.

Writing Lab

About the Teacher

MJHS Writing Lab has been redesigned for the 2016-2017 school. Our new tiered facility allows students in the back row to see the front of the classroom without rows in front of them blocking their view. The Writing Lab curriculum has also been updated to help develop the 7th graders skills in writing with technology. During the first semester, Writing Lab 1 will focus on improving keyboarding skills, refining sentence fluency, and efficiently using the variety of  technology offered to MJHS students. Writing Lab 2, which will begin in the second semester, will focus on developing research skills with attention to maintaining academic integrity while using available resources. White Team students will be in the Writing Lab first and third quarters, while Green Team students will meet in Writing Lab during the second and fourth quarters of the school year.

I'm fortunate to enjoy a position which combines a couple of  my favorite activities - writing and using technology. Prior to teaching in the Writing Lab at MJHS, I worked in the Jefferson Elementary Computer Lab. I also served as a substitute teacher in Morton for several years when my children were younger. My teaching career began with high school English and junior high language arts classes. An English major with a journalism minor, I graduated from Eastern Illinois University.

Mission for the Class

My mission for the Writing Lab is to help each student become comfortable and confident with the variety of technology tools that are offered in the school district.
