Miss DeBoer

Art

About the Teacher
I have been teaching art since 1986 and have been employed by Morton Unit School District 709 since 1987. This is my first year at MJHS. I have taught at the high school, all four grade schools and now the junior high. I enjoy teaching all media to my students, but favor drawing because that is where I can see the most growth.

I am also the high school's certified athletic trainer. I am certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association to treat and rehab injuries of our high school athletes.

I started my life in Pekin, IL as an infant but was quickly wisked away and arrived in Mt. Zion, IL for my formative years. I graduated from Eastern Illinois University with my Bachelor's of Art in art education with a concentration of athletic training in 1986. My first teaching experience was at Schaumburg High School. I received my master's in athletic training from Illinois State University in 2002. In my spare time I enjoy umpiring softball, photographing the district's sporting events, and visiting zoos.

Mission Statement for Art Education for All
With the thought that most individuals will be consumers of art rather than career artist, art education should increase an individual's appreciation of the arts. The mission of 7th grade art is to help the student to understand the collective body of knowledge associated with the visual arts including: principles and elements of design, color theory, technical skills, critical thinking skills, historic and cultural art influences, and the vocabulary pertaining to each area. The students need to develop the ability to "see art," viewing and being aware of art in our everyday surroundings. Works of art are read and interpreted. Just as language has its own symbols and vocabulary, art also has its vocabulary of visual and design elements through which thought, emotion and experience are conveyed. Once a student has experienced art in my classroom, he/she should be able to express his/her's art preferences by explaining the aesthetics of the work with art terminology.

Writing Lab

About the Teacher

I'm looking forward to another year in the MJHS Writing Lab. The resources available in the Writing Lab provide a learning experience that is truly unique. Not only do we always have laptops, the Internet and SMART technology available, we have the benefit of a cooperative learning environment. Beyond our writing curriculum, both students and teachers are always growing and learning through sharing technological skills and knowledge.

I’m fortunate to enjoy a position which combines my favorite activities – writing and using technology. In the Writing Lab, we’ll be using the latest Microsoft Office products to publish writing in creative ways while focusing the process of writing and the six traits of good writing.

Prior to teaching in the Writing Lab, I worked for four years in the Jefferson Elementary Computer Lab. I also served as a substitute teacher in Morton for several years while my children were younger. My teaching career began in high school English and junior high language arts classes. An English major with a journalism minor, I graduated from Eastern Illinois University.

When my husband and I moved to the area 12 years ago, we chose Morton for its fine schools. My two older children are both graduates of Morton High School. My oldest daughter and her husband graduated from Eastern Illinois University and are pursuing graduate degrees at Illinois State University. My son is a senior at ISU. My youngest daughter is a junior at Morton High School.

Mission for the Class

My mission for the Writing Lab is to help each student find his strengths in writing. I hope each student will become comfortable tackling a variety of writing tasks by developing confidence in his own skills.

Mr. Terhark

Technology Lab

About the Teacher
My name is Greg Terhark and I am the Technology Lab teacher at Morton Junior High School. I graduated from Union College in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1994. Mission for the Class
My mission for this year is to give the students exposure to various technology-oriented career fields through the use of computer modules and to enjoy ourselves during the process.

Health

About the Teacher
I graduated in 1997 from Illinois State University with a Bachelors of Science in Health Education and a minor in History Education.  This will be my 12th  year of teaching.  Morton Junior High is where I did my student teaching back in 1997.  I then spent 4 years teaching at Pontiac Junior High School, and three years teaching/subbing for Unit 5 in Normal.  I am now in my 5th year here at Morton.  I love the profession of teaching because I get to spend my day surrounded by children.  I especially love teaching health because there are so many important and interesting things to talk about!

Mission for the Class
My mission for health class is to help you save a life, whether it be your own or someone else's.  We learn CPR/First Aid, safety issues of all kinds, violence prevention, alcohol/drug information, and abstinence education.  All of these topics can help you save yourself or someone else some day.  Health is one of the most important classes you will ever have!  I feel so fortunate to be the one to teach it to you
