8TH GRADE RED TEAM

Welcome to the Red Team information page!

The middle school philosophy encourages students to view the diverse range of subject areas, such as math, science, language arts, fine arts, and social studies, as interrelated and applicable in their everyday lives. The Red Team teachers embrace this philosophy by providing students with many opportunities to see the connections between the different classes and apply concepts from these classes in their lives outside of school. Interdisciplinary Units (IDUs) are used frequently to provide students with additional experiences that reinforce concepts learned in the classroom.

The Red Team teachers look forward to working with the students of the class of 2015. If you have any questions, feel free to send us an email or leave a message on our school phones. You can connect to the individual teachers’ homepages by clicking on the links provided below.

Red Team Google Listserv - This link lists all email messages that have been sent.  It will allow new or even non-subscribers to view what has been sent out in the past.

Miss Winchell

Science

About the Teacher
I started teaching at MJHS in 2003.  For the first 4 years I taught 7th grade Earth & Life sciences, but in 2007 I moved to 8th grade to teach Chemistry & Physics.  I earned my Bachelor of Arts degree from Bradley University (Peoria) in 2002 and am currently working on a Masters degree in Teaching & Leadership/Administration from the University of Illinois (Springfield).  I have also spent the better part of 10 years working for the USDA - National Center for Agriculture Utilization Research (or "Ag Lab" for short).  Although I don't work full time at the Ag Lab anymore, I still spend some summers there and keep in close contact with my co-workers.  They continually supply my classroom with hard-to-find items, such as liquid nitrogen and other chemicals, for my demonstration days.  My former extracurricular activities include 5 years as the MJHS Dance Team coach, 3 years as co-sponsor for student council, and 2 years as White Team leader.  I have been the science department head since 2007.

I love my job and get more enthusiastic about science with each passing year.  Striving to be a livelong learner, I continuously look for ways to expand my science knowledge and expertise...this usually encompasses much of my summer months.  I have spent my summers working at the Ag Lab or teaching college for kids at Illinois Central College.  However, this summer I had the opportunity to work for Fermilab in Batavia, IL.  Fermilab is a famous physics laboratory that houses the Tevatron, a 4 mile particle collider.  CERN, located in Geneva, Switzerland, houses the world's biggest collider, the LHC, at closer to 17 miles in circumference.  My project at Fermilab dealt primarily with the CMS detector, one of the two biggest detectors at CERN.  Every year I look forward to integrating my lab experiences into my curriculum at MJHS.

I am also a volunteer member of the American Chemical Society where I spend time putting on super cool hands-on science demonstrations during National Chemistry Week every October.  (I have also been known to give out extra credit just for having a blast at these fun activities!)  Through ACS, I have also organized and facilitated several workshops for teachers to integrate science across the curriculum.  Still want to know more?  I'm a huge hockey fan!  Growing up, I spent 7 years playing ice hockey...I was the only girl on the team!

Mr. Wellenreiter

History

About the Teacher

My name is Ben Wellenreiter and I am the Red Team American History teacher here at MJHS.  This is my thirteenth year of teaching.  I have been at Morton for my entire teaching career.  In addition to teaching history, I have also taught undergraduate-level middle school social studies methods and co-taught graduate level curriculum history at Illinois State University.

I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Social Science Education at ISU in 1998.  I am certified in U.S. History, World History, Geography, Sociology, Economics, and Political Science.  In 2005 I received my Master of Arts degree in School Counseling at Bradley and am a Nationally Certified Counselor.  I am nearing completion of a Doctor of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction at ISU.  My dissertation research concerns the social processes in which adolescents participate in the school cafeteria.

When I am not at school, I enjoy traveling, photography, (lightning, storms, natural weather phenomena, etc) scuba diving, mountain biking, and reading.  My travels have taken me to South America, Europe, Africa, and all around the United States.  I am also active within my church, (Bethel Lutheran, Morton).  I look forward to working with everyone in the 2010-11 school year!

Miss Hasler

Language Arts

About the Teacher

I am a graduate of Bradley University. This will be my fourth year at MJHS.  Being from Central Illinois, teaching in my home area is an honor.  I am currently coaching softball here at the junior high.   Also, I am the freshman softball coach over at MHS, and I also work with the varsity.  I am a die-hard Cubs fan.  I love my sports, both playing them and watching them on TV. I just bought a house here in Morton so I am extremely excited to become part of this great community. I look forward to getting to know the community, students, and parents throughout the year.

Mission for the Class

The mission of my class is to widen a student's outlook on learning and literature through providing a wide range of stories and novels to share.  Also, I strive to provide a positive and welcoming environment to all students.  Learning in a positive atmosphere is not only a path to success, but also a way to a better educational outlook.

Mr. Schick

Math

About the Teacher
This will be my 4th year of teaching math, but my 1st at Morton Junior High School. I have lived in Morton my entire life and had the privilege of going to school in this wonderful district. After graduating from Morton High School, I went to Illinois Central College and then on to Illinois State University to complete my math degree. For the past 3 years, I taught math in East Peoria, Illinois at both the high school and junior high level. I am very excited to be "home" and teach at MJHS and I look forward to a great year with students, parents, faculty, and administration.

Mission for the Class
My mission for the classroom is to create a learning environment where all students can be successful. I will challenge every student to reach their potential by using various instructional methods and involving the students in the learning process.
