7TH GRADE WHITE TEAM

Welcome to our webpage! We are glad you are here. The White Team is an exciting group of teachers who is constantly looking for new, innovative ways to incorporate multiple teaching styles to identify and respond to the specific learning styles of our students. We try to connect with each student so that they are stimulated and challenged academically, in an environment where they can feel safe and accepted. Learning should be an ongoing process for both the student as well as the educator. The education of children can best be accomplished with a coordinated teamwork between teachers, parents, students, and community members.

The White Team works together to create several interdisciplinary units each year that integrate the core subject areas around a central theme. Some of our units involving the whole team are - a look at the decade of the 1930's, a state project that incorporates the use of Moviemaker, our European IDU, a look at the Earth, and the Human body. Fun and exciting activities planned within these units include, a popcorn viewing of the student-made State Movies, White Team's Taste of Europe, a viewing of Discovery's Planet Earth at the Bertha Frank Center, a Peoria Chiefs Game at O'Brien Field, and a softball tournament at Westwood Park. Because our teachers are always coming up with new and innovative ideas, our units are always changing! Individual teachers also work together to create several mini-units around more specific themes.

Geography

About the Teacher
Welcome to social studies! This will be my ninth year teaching Geography at Morton Junior High School and my twelfth year in the teaching profession.  I am a proud graduate of Eureka College ’99 and the Olivet Nazarene University Masters in Educational Leadership Program ‘09. Throughout the year we will take a look at both the physical and cultural geography of North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and more.  Our class goal is a better cultural awareness by developing an understanding of the diverse beliefs and customs of the people of our planet.  During the year I will also be coaching Cross Country, Girls' Basketball, Scholastic Bowl, and Track.  Please feel free to contact me with any questions you have either in person, through e-mail or by phone.  I look forward to another great year of working with the best students in the world.

Science

About the Teacher

I am so excited to teach Morton's seventh grade students all about life and earth science!!!  I began my education as a Canton Little Giant and then earned my BS in Biology at Western Illinois University in 2001.  I completed my MA in Educational Administration at Governor's State University in 2008.  This will be my ninth year teaching... I began my career with 7/8 grade General Science in Metamora and then had the opportunity to teach Enriched Biology and Anatomy/Physiology at Richwoods High School.  Although I truly enjoyed each experience, I feel that MJHS is the perfect fit for me because I value the opportunity to educate the students of my own community!  This year, I will be involved with yearbook, student council, and the spelling bee.  I also stay busy with my family... my husband and I have two daughters: Isabel (7 years) and Ashlen (5 years).   I am sure you will become quite familiar with them, as they love attending activities at MJHS!

Mission for the Class

My mission is to promote independent thinking and problem solving skills by teaching students to utilize the resources available to them (first and foremost... their BRAINS!!!).  Science is about constantly questioning the world around us and actively pursuing the answers to those questions!  I hope to provide students with a solid foundation of the basic concepts of life and earth science, as well as the skills necessary to independently think about, and explore science in an organized and effective manner.

Math

About the Teacher
While a student at Bradley University, I was involved in multiple levels of education ranging from preschool and 2nd grade all the way to 6th grade! After earning my Bachelor's in 2002, I moved to the Chicago area and taught 7th grade Math for 3 years; I also coached soccer and volleyball at the middle school. After returning to my hometown of Peoria in the summer of 2005, I completed my Master's Degree in Educational Technology through Lesley University. The 2010-2011 school year will be my sixth teaching in the Morton School District! I also have the privilege of coaching Cross Country, Volleyball, and Track at MJHS.

Mission for the Class
My ultimate goal in the classroom is to reinforce the seventh grade curriculum to increase student understanding and ability in the area of mathematics. We explore a variety of concepts including number theory, data analysis, fractions, proportions, and geometry. Emphasis is placed on improving organization and management skills, cooperating with peers, and utilizing available resources. I hope to provide a positive and comfortable environment for students as they participate in daily work, class projects, and extra opportunities.

Language Arts

About the Teacher
This year I am returning to my teaching roots in the language arts classroom, and I'm very excited about sharing my love of reading and writing with the students at MJHS. This will be my 33rd year of teaching, and I am as enthusiatic about it now as I was when I started so long ago. Teaching jr. high keeps me young. It is truly what I love to do.

I have a husband, two wonderful daughters (and two "also wonderful" sons-in-law), a very energetic big red dog (kind of like Clifford),two schizophrenic cats, 5 fish (all named after famous artists), and I am known as Nana to three beautiful little boys named Jake, Alex and Ben and the newest addition to the family, my granddaughter, Lilly. All of these things make me happy.

I think reading, bicycling, gardening and golf are fun. Cooking rivals art as my passion---unfortunately for my figure,I enjoy eating what I cook, too! I love to laugh and be around people who make me do it. Life is good.

Here's why language arts is important:
...because understanding words and how to use them effectively leads to a broader understanding of yourself and others.....because words and the ability to use them to express ourselves is what makes us human.....because with an appreciation for language comes the responsiblity of using it well. Words are powerful. They have the ability to inspire, to wound, and to calm. Words can express love and hate, beauty or ugliness, joy and sorrow. To create with words is special. To read what others have created....well, on a rainy day, it doesn't get much better than that.
